Things That Matter: Dwell In His Presence

Writer: Alice FreemanAlice Freeman

Things that matter are things that we can't see with our eyes nor touch with our hands. Temporary Joy is when you got something that got you excited, but after a while that feeling diminishes. But when you are excited from the inside out, when you have a vision that God has promised; though you have yet to receive it, you know it's coming.

One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple. - Psalms 27:4 ESV

This psalms was written by David; he was in deep trouble and there is one thing that David asked of the Lord that "I may dwell in the hosue of the Lord all the days of my life."

There are three important notes here :

  1. To dwell

  2. To gaze

  3. To Inquire

TO DWELL :

  • To live as a resident

  • To remain

  • To keep attention to

The question we must ask our selves: Where do you live? What have you been given your full attention to?

The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid? - Psalms 27:1 NIV

The Lord is my light … David was situated in the dark (in fact in the cave; in hiding) but his theology declared that he doesn’t live in the dark, he dwells in the Light.

The Lord is my salvation … David was situated in the run; in dead end (in fact he was hunted in need of saving) but his theology declared that he wasn’t lost , his theology declared God is my savior.. he in fact saved at least 30 men who then became famously known as mighty men of David.

The Lord is my Stronghold … David was situated in the "nowhere." He was a chosen king with no castle nor palace nor army (in fact again in the cave in hiding) but his theology declared that he doesn’t live as if being surrounded but his theology declared he was a king who lived in a safe place, in His Presence. He even honored the anointing of Saul.. Saul was in David’s mercy in his stronghold, not the other way around. Isn't God an amazing God?

3 for you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the enemy. 4 Let me dwell in your tent forever! Let me take refuge under the shelter of your wings! - Psalms 61:3-4 ESV

Faith arises when we hear and speak the word of God like David. This is why it is crucial that we study the word and devote to seek Him in His word. David understood that the things that matter are never the outside situations but what was inside of Him.

TO GAZE

  • to fix our eyes in a steady and intense look

  • studious attention

“It’s essential that we become fascinated, gripped, and captivated by the Lord. If not, we will struggle with boredom, and our hearts will be vulnerable to pursue other things.”

David knows the moment his eyes was off the Lord, he began to look at his palace, his greatness, his praises, his position of power and he looked at bethsheeba…

and to get what he gazed for he used his power his resources… that’s why "blessings, riches and power without God" will be a bad resources to do what your selfishness desires..

I lift up my eyes to the mountains— where does my help come from? 2 My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth. - Psalms 121:1-2 NIV

The Lord does not slumber he watches over you… it means that God never take His eyes off of you. Often times, it is us who took our gaze off the Lord.

Lastly, TO INQUIRE

  • To ask about

  • To seek information

  • To search for

Moses inquired of the Lord asking for wisdom to lead 3 millions people and God gave him the ten commandments. In Ziklag, David inquired the lord having lost his family and his armies' families captured by the enemy; and God gave him victory.

Best advice comes from our Father in Heaven..

Though my father and mother forsake me, the Lord will receive me. 11 Teach me your way, Lord; lead me in a straight path because of my oppressors. - Psalms 27:10-11 NIV

where will you get the best advice from? The word of God. Period.

16 All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage]; 17 so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work. - 2 Timothy 3:16-17 AMP

God is A perfect Father.

Jesus inquired of His father to do His will. The importance of Father figure in our life..

1 Corinthians 4:15 NKJV

15 For though you might have ten thousand instructors in Christ, yet you do not have many fathers; for in Christ Jesus I have begotten you through the gospel.

Why it is not good for men to be alone.. and have no father figure, only have teachers ..

this is why christians can’t grow by only following preachers online and have no father figure

what does it mean to have father figure?

  1. You have healthy relationship with GOD your true father

  2. You have authority over your life

  3. You have figure to admire and to follow as moral compass

  4. You have a Home a family you are not lone ranger wandering (even john the baptist had full functional family)

Understanding His word will gain us revelations and knowlegde of our God and it will transform our lives. Spend time one on one daily with God. Dwell in His Presence. That's the thing that matters in life.
